April 16, 2026 — The International Tropical Seaweed Research Center (ITSRC), University of Mataram, participated as a key speaker in the Technical Workshop on Seaweed Seed Biobank Development, organized by the Directorate General of Aquaculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), in collaboration with UNIDO under the GQSP Indonesia Phase 2 program.

The online workshop brought together key stakeholders from across Indonesia’s aquaculture sector, including technical directorates, aquaculture centers, and international partners. The event aimed to enhance understanding of standardized genetic resource management through the development of seaweed biobanking systems.

During the session, Dr. Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya (ITSRC–UNRAM) delivered a comprehensive presentation on the principles and development of seaweed biobanks. The presentation covered core aspects such as biobank concepts, specimen documentation, biological material preservation, database management, and integration with DNA barcoding technologies.

As one of Indonesia’s leading commodities, seaweed holds significant economic and ecological value. However, challenges remain, particularly in species identification, genetic resource conservation, and the availability of standardized high-quality seedlings. The establishment of biobank systems represents a strategic approach to support superior strain selection and enhance national productivity.

ITSRC–UNRAM’s contribution to this initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to advancing research-based innovations in support of sustainable seaweed development, particularly in the conservation and utilization of genetic resources.
