ITSRC Universitas Mataram Strengthens International Seaweed Research Network in China

Nanning, China, September 2026 — The International Tropical Seaweed Research Center (ITSRC), Universitas Mataram, continues to strengthen its international research network in the field of seaweed science. This commitment was demonstrated through the participation of Dr. Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya, Associate Professor and researcher at ITSRC Universitas Mataram, in the International Workshop on Fishery Sustainable Development in Countries along the South China Sea in Nanning, China.

 

At the workshop, Dr. Eka was invited as a keynote speaker, presenting on the diversity of Indonesian seaweeds, covering field exploration and molecular identification, as well as their potential as valuable resources for sustainable aquaculture development.

Indonesia is home to exceptionally high seaweed diversity, yet some of these resources remain insufficiently documented. Through ITSRC, Universitas Mataram continues to advance research connecting biodiversity, molecular identification, genetic resource conservation, aquaculture, and seaweed utilization.

 

“Indonesia is not only a major seaweed-producing country, but also home to rich biodiversity that needs to be properly understood and conserved. Accurate species identification is an important foundation for the sustainable development of these resources for aquaculture, conservation, and future innovation,” said Dr. Eka.

 

Participation in this international forum also strengthened collaboration between Universitas Mataram and the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (SCSFRI), China, creating opportunities for joint research, researcher exchange, and human resource capacity building.

 

Through strengthened international collaboration, ITSRC Universitas Mataram continues to advance the development of a tropical seaweed research center connecting biodiversity, conservation, aquaculture, and innovation, while further strengthening Universitas Mataram’s contribution to marine research at the global level.
