UMCMB Invited to APEC Workshop 2025 in Busan, South Korea
Highlighting Indonesia’s Marine Innovation on the Global Stage
The University of Mataram Center for Marine Biorefineries (UMCMB) participated in the APEC Workshop 2025 held in Busan, South Korea, under the theme “Strengthening Climate Resilience and Food Security via Stakeholder-Driven Sustainable Seaweed Supply Chains.” The workshop was organized by APEC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea and the Korea Maritime Institute.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya was invited as a keynote speaker, presenting “Advancing the Seaweed Industry Through R&D and Market Innovation: Insights from Indonesia.” He highlighted Indonesia’s progress in seaweed research, sustainable practices, and industry development.
Carrageenan, a valuable biopolymer derived from red seaweed, is widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest carrageenan producers, continues to pioneer innovations in sustainable cultivation, processing, and supply chain development showcasing its commitment to marine-based economic growth.
UMCMB’s participation in this international forum reinforces Indonesia’s strategic role in promoting sustainable marine biotechnologies to support global climate resilience and food security.
