UMCMB Joins the 13th International Phycological Congress in Bohol, Philippines
The 13th International Phycological Congress (IPC) will take place from June 8–13, 2025, in Panglao, Bohol, a renowned marine biodiversity hotspot in the Philippines. This year’s congress is hosted by the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, and brings together global experts to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration in algal research.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya from the University of Mataram Centre for Marine Biorefineries (UMCMB) contributed with an oral presentation titled “Growth and Biochemical Profile of a Possible Novel Kappaphycus Species Found in Indonesia.” His research highlighted the untapped potential of Indonesian marine flora and its relevance to the country’s leading role in the global carrageenan industry.
In addition, two UMCMB research assistants presented posters focusing on the diversity of Mimica and Caulerpa species in West Nusa Tenggara. These studies emphasized the importance of local biodiversity in supporting sustainable seaweed resource development.

As one of the world’s top seaweed producers, Indonesia’s involvement in the IPC reinforces its commitment to advancing marine science through international cooperation and innovation.
