UMCMB participates in Seagriculture Conference Asia Pacific 2025

Learning more about the relevancy, resiliency, and scalability of Asia pacific seaweed farming industry at Seagriculture  – This year’s Seagriculture Conference for Asia Pacific was held in Adelaide, Australia from 18th – 20th March 2025. Associate Professor Eka S. Prasedya from the University of Mataram Centre for Marine Biorefineries (UMCMB) contributed as a speaker, emphasising the significance of investigating the genetic diversity of native Euchuematoid populations in Indonesia.

Seaweed cultivation is an expanding global sector, exhibiting significant promise as a food source, biofuel, fertiliser, and ingredient in medicinal and cosmetic products, while also potentially contributing to broader climate change mitigation strategies for the planet’s carbon problem.

The growth is insufficient, and despite its much-lauded environmental advantages—now undergoing more rigorous scrutiny—permitting, production expenses, processing infrastructure, and scalability present considerable challenges.

The primary insights from Seagriculture, the inaugural international seaweed conference, were that it was held in the Asia Pacific for the second time.

Conducted in March at Adelaide, Australia – The primary priorities are investment capital, scalable production technology, and, arguably most crucially, receptive markets especially for new species with large potential as feed such as Asparagopsis.
