UMCMB and Konservasi Indonesia Launch Seaweed Planting and Workshop in Waingapu

Empowering Local Farmers Through Training and Sustainable Practices
Waingapu, East Sumba – The University of Mataram Center for Marine Biorefineries (UMCMB), in collaboration with Conservation Indonesia, held a seaweed planting program in the coastal area of Waingapu. The activity was part of a joint effort to restore coastal ecosystems and strengthen the economic resilience of local seaweed farming communities.
In addition to distributing seaweed seedlings, the event included a hands-on workshop on seedling planting techniques and site selection for optimal seaweed growth. Participants were trained on how to identify suitable environmental conditions, proper spacing, and maintenance techniques to enhance yield and ensure sustainable farming practices.

The initiative was enthusiastically received by the local community. Mr. Mantu, head of the Waingapu Seaweed Farmers Group, shared his appreciation:
“We are very happy with the arrival of these new seaweed seedlings. This is a new hope for us to improve our harvest and increase our income. The training also gave us new knowledge and confidence. Thank you to UMCMB and Conservation Indonesia for supporting our group,” said Mr. Mantu.

This collaborative program is expected to be the first of many, building long-term partnerships between scientific institutions and local communities to promote sustainable aquaculture and marine conservation in East Sumba.
